fuck smartphones

This thread is for people who want to move away from smartphones.
Have you used a dumphone before?
What would your ideal smartphone replacement be?

I want to use a beepy (https://beepy.sqfmi.com/) which is just a handheld raspberry pi 0 with an old blackberry keyboard and the same monochrome lcd display as the playdate and it's so cool and exactly what i want i can just talk on irc and use terminal based programs I dont want a fucking smartphone. No one else makes anything like the beepy and anythign close costs $9,999,999,999,999.999 and i dont want to spend that much money i just want a beepy but with a better battery.

Tried doing this but honestly I just ended up doing the same things I was doing on my phone on a laptop.

I'd like to get one of these funny indie developed devices, sometimes they're sim card enabled and can atleast do LTE. I think for stuff like you said and stuff like music, that would be fun

I know smartphones kind of ruin the fun of computers but since they are extremely battery efficient, have lots of interfaces in them (that tend to reliably work 100% of the time), are packaged well and are more durable than any indie project device, it feels insane that we have this insecure idea to get rid of them. I just let mine fade in the background and don't care so much. If you don't like having logs being sent to various services that leave certain forms of footprints of your whereabouts then leave your phone at home most of the time or something. Get another LTE device in addition that you know doesn't have services running that will give these footprints. Oh yeah people store their phones in these lined rucksacks and other bags so they can't be reached, just so you know that's an option too (makes calling them not possible).

If there's a simpler LTE device, triangulating the approximate location should still kind of be possible if you wanna be really autistic about whereabouts footprint but yeah.

I know smartphones kind of ruin the fun of computers
that's exactly the point, I want to feel good when I'm doing my computing I don't want to feel bad. I want my portable computing to be fun.

using desktop computers feels bad
what?

genuinely how did you get that out of my post. I want you to explain how you could possibly have read the post where I directly specify "portable computing" and thought "this guy must be talking about desktop computers".

if your someone who doesnt leave they house you can set up a voip account with the endless providers(free and paid for) and install 'gnome-calls' package on debian, arch, etc. I can call people using my laptop or desktop, works with every linux sound software (pipewire and pulse audio). depending on the voip provider and hardware you can setup voice mail and texting.

You know I'd use a feature phone if it wasn't for the fact I already have a smartphone and rely on it for Google Maps also I just find the whole dumping a smartphone for a feature phone kinda gay and pretentious.
14 Name: Anonymous 2024-07-07 13:16
i've never switched from a flip phone. there's a few inconveniences using them in today's world but i got other tech so it's been fine. it's also easier to carry around. some flip phones today have "smart features". my current one can access the web and is leagues above any phone i tried to use for web surfing back in the 00s. anyway, phones are what we make them and i only use mine for calls, texts, timer and a clock. if i didn't care for a family member i'd never have it on lol.

i love to CONSOOOOM modern minimalist tech (TM) rather than sticking with decades old tech that;s infinitely cheaper, practical, and hacker friendly. can't wait to buy my new pinefone pro and fairphone so i can run NIX OS WITH PLASMA on the go :D My OFFICE FRIENDS are gonna be so JEALOUS!!!

just speculation on my part. my guess is their living situation involves other people so they can't goon on the family computer, and are using their phone while "taking a shit".
>>17
the answer of course to use all the prephone methods - like we did in the stone age. wake up at 3am to sneak on the family computer , use magazines, or (and this is gunna blow your mind) your god damned imagination.

i was never conditioned to use smartphones so if i want a phone i just get a dumbphone from family dollar, usually a flip phone that has a tactile input pad

I can browse this site on my nokia.
24 Name: Anonymous 2025-06-19 18:00
nice.
I remember old phones had WAP internet, before GPRS or something.
so when I first heard of some wapchan, I wondered if that was the site meant to be browsed via old WAP phones. I opened it, and then some musthave js CloudNig captcha greeted me. It was long time ago, maybe prev year. They solved that so far. But site is inactive. Well, maybe this is better be genuine, than be filled with bot gpt pastas.

Old phones ended prematurely, I was about to learn java for all those cool java games on mobiles.
Technology is approaching singularity. Human mind can't keep up. The minute you want to play some nostalgia Doodle Jump, an Skynet robot will come with a stick.

Thanks for sharing beepy, more affordable alternative to Librem5

Chips need to be universally reproducible. like grow on trees. Looking forward bioware wetware.

just uninstall apps and practice a modicum of accountability.
buying minimalism is lame

This! It's literally a dumbphone with signal on it. What more could one want? They're too expensive for me, right now. I will get one at some point.

loser poser neets "muh aesthetics" you want aesthetics? crack your screen protector but not destroy it, duct tape the back and draw shit on it with sharpie. [i]aesthetics[i] you want praxis? jailbreak the phone and rip out tracking software, or literally just let the phone battery die and leave it dead. pathetic. pathetic. corpo stans are just stacking the wall with this years version of funcopops. buying "minimalism aesthetics" from trend chasing dipshits who hand the list of buyers and the back door keys straight to the feds for treefiddy.
fuck you. you will get what you deserve.

anywaynow that tor is completely fucked from the ground up you think there is anything remotely approaching "security" in technology? hilarious

41 Name: Anonymous 2025-07-27 18:53
crack your screen protector but not destroy it
accidentally done
duct tape the back and draw shit on it with sharpie
done except for the sharpie part
jailbreak the phone and rip out tracking software
installed lineage with custom low power consumption kernel, so kinda done
I also unscrewed it and removed the camera. Wanna rip out the microphone too but that would make it not a phone anymore.

truth and real, ive spent about 5 hours on my phone a day means thats like 5 hours i could be doing something creative, think il replace it with just fucking around on gimp for 3 hours and il leave 2 hours for actually being on the phone
43 Name: Anonymous 2025-07-28 11:46
my phone has been locked in a cupboard unintentionally for a week i have just not bothered to get it the only time i ever really need my phone is to listen to music whilst jogging i really like the idea of a dumb phone maybe when i have real people to call i will get a beautiful pink fliphone other than that don't give in

Dumb phones are pretty great when you add a MicroSD card. 32 megabytes is just not enough for music.

i had an iphone 12 mini which was great cause fuck big phones, and i got to the point of deleting socials and putting a distraction-free launcher type thingy on it. problem being i threw it like a dumbass and it shattered and died. got a unihertz jelly star w lineageos cause i wanted a small phone and i don't use it for much, plus i hate google. turns out that didn't support calls (data and text worked fine) and i'm not enough of a nerd to fix it. ran out to <generic electronics store> and the cheapest phone they had was a nokia flip phone. my current setup is the nokia for calls, texts, and a hotspot with the unihertz for signal, grayjay, and music. If I really need to do some compooting portably i have a laptop for that. tbh i didn't have an interest in digital minimalism or anything, i just gravitate towards weird electronics. i got an ipod and modded it a while ago cause i wanted one as a kid and found eliteobsolete. if i could use signal on my nokia i would stop using the unihertz. the nokia doesn't play flacs and i'm a pedant so i won't do that

wanted to add that i really like the idea of e-ink on a phone but i'm too broke to change phones that often. not like i ever *watch* videos on my phone anyway

the best way to get aesthetics is just walk into a series of dumb decisions until you end up with the same loadout as a minimalist phone shill cause THEY DON'T MAKE SMALL FUCKING PHONES ANYMORE

I am planning to replace my smartphone with a cheap cell and a PSP. I fished the PSP out of a dumpster. Its analog stick is broken, it lacks a back plate, and the battery is missing. The screen needs replacing but the PSP does turn on. The whole thing is coated with gunk and dirt. I've ordered a new shell, screen, and analog stick. I will also replace the buttons. I'm thinking about removing the UMD drive. It would reduce the weight of the device and isn't necessary. The only frustrating thing about these older PSPs is their lack of bluetooth. I know some tech people will yell at me for using it.

the best way to use a smartphone is to wrap it in copper wire and throw it into a power line

I wonder if there's a phone small enough that I can fit into the PSP's UMD drive slot once I remove the actual drive. No... nope. Nothing can be that small.
