theres only a few anime that i really enjoyed, nge, lain, cowboy bepop, ghibli, satoshi kon, but when i try to watch other stuff i find it kiddy and annoying.
i was watching cyberpunk edgerunners and i did not care about the characters at all, it was all cool hacker kids being edgy, i watched aot and dropped it because eren is loud and annoying, the fight scenes were alright but you had to watch 20 min of screaming kids to get to them. i guess i like more "adult" themes in anime, stuff like nge deals with serious themes of abandonment and not living up to your potential, lain deals with finding comfort in online spaces when you are a loner, etc, theres only so much super powered anime boy beating up monsters i can watch. i just cant relate with most of the anime fandom. does anyone else feel like this? what animes should i watch instead?

flowers of evil is pretty good its about coming to terms with your deepest darkest desires, finding beauty in the decadence and confusion of modern life Steins Gate also has that dark ambient aura with some pretty damn good dry humor and the art style isnt fucking colorful grating hues

>>1 that's quite common, I felt same. Some people quit watching, that's why I made 'Last anime' thread. That's not unusual for anime. Same thing is with kino, music, gaming, every other art industry. Ofc like in any business most of producers want to sell dopamine & make money.
there is wide variety of animes & mangas covering mature topics, for mature audiences. growing up, coming out of age. I disagree that nge is targeting adults. I don't thing that there is one singe definition of "adult" anime, other than it's not showcasing school. Because there are varieties of genres.
Kino no tabi, maybe?
Some people blame capitalism, I don't. I did pay for anime dvds, live cinema theatres, live music gigs.
it's possible anime is just not for you, and that's ok. Even if you have an interest in otaku culture but don't like anime, you may find more enjoyment from manga for example. But i'd like to analyse your post for a second.
From what you're saying, it seems like you're into the classic sort of "high tier" or as you put it "adult themes" type of anime, and you dislike the popular shounen anime like aot, "theres only so much super powered anime boy beating up monsters i can watch."
In that case, I think it might be best to look outside of the most popular action shows for the more mature anime, perhaps classed as "seinen" rather than "shounen". There are wonderful shows which are very far from super powered anime boy beating up monsters, from across anime history. The mainstream anime fandom is mostly made up of teenagers, and most anime is targeted at teenagers. But that is not all there is. If you're looking for recommendations,I think you would like mushishi, if you can become comfortable with a show with a bit of a slower, more thoughtful pace. I'd also ask you to look into the moe side of anime, perhaps start with k-on and see if it does anything for you. If you want recommendations for more philosophical anime like lain, just ask and I can provide a list.
