Hiking

I want to start a hiking thread here since I think this hobby is perfect for alienated people that are potentially Neets, that still want to stay in good health.

It's really easy to get started with by going on a daily walk to a quiet place, maybe with a backpack filled with a bunch of weight.
In that process, one can always listen to some content, maybe even related to hiking as further preparation for a real, multi day hike.
At some point one can search around for hiking routes on apps like "komoot" to gradually find more challenging routes.

An investment into basic Hiking poles, fast drying clothes, somewhat water-resistant shoes, a long rain poncho, a 40L Backpack, a tarp and sleepingbag,  etc... can be made along the way.
What's important, is to always buy stuff with a neutral design with black or muted colors since then you can still use them outside the context of hiking and you'll never be one of those neon colored eyesores.

This hobby is rather cheap and results in a dopamine detox if you keep it up, obviously more so if you go for multi-day hikes or even weeks.
It's also a source of self-worth and a way to challenge one self and explore one's physical and mental limits.
It also keeps you fit and healthy for the day you might get forced to be a wage-slave.

In my case I got to this hobby since my knees could not take a 10km run anymore.
Now I regularly go on low budget hikes for days on end and train for the L1 400km hike through the Alps from Garmisch to Brescia in 2027.
One of my training routes is about 30km and 1km elevation that I walk with 10kg on my back and I already walked multiple +100km hikes, including routes through the Alps.

Oh and yes, it's important to stay away from touristy trails and potentialy Inns since a lot of hikers are just insufferable.
A good rule of thump is: The more color, equipment load, expensive gear, the less you should talk with those people about anything other then a reassurance that you still are on the right trail.

If someone has questions for the topic of hiking, I could give rather qualified answers, though from a West-European perspective.
Thoughts you had during a hike could also be posted here.

I also want to shill for this guy called "Gear Skeptic" and "The Map Reading Company"

https://www.youtube.com/@TheMapReadingCompany/videos

The guides to nutrition and the guides to basic movement and navigation are a must watch imo.

PS: In regards to dopamin detoxing: During a challenging hike you are not able to consume any media at all after a few hours since all the blood you have will go to the muscles and lungs and not to the brain.
This feeling is key for breaking an addiction to information for example...

I'm used to hiking in the British countryside, but overall your opinions on gear are spot on. You don't need a fancy shell to keep the rain off.
I what would you say is your favorite fabric to wear as a base layer? Since you are hiking in higher altitudes I would like to hear what your preference is

I hike almost every other day. It me realize that society is what's driving me insane. I've never got specialist equipment beyond some surplus military boots and waterproof clothing. I haven't done any long distance hiking though.
4 Name: Hiker 2025-11-17 20:54
I stick with basic cheapo synthetic fast dry T-shirts.

Merano is great but only for the more casual folks I'd guess.

I do laundry almost every day on trail because I always have a high body temperature and sweat a lot despite only wearing shorts and a baselayer 90% of the time.
Merino smelling less and having more potential for warmth is a non factor for me since I need to do laundry pretty much every day to remove the salt crusts I always leave after a day of intense hiking.

What peaks my intresst is a fishnet / mesh baselayer since my problem is always heat and me sweating a ton (and sunburn) since I only do long distance hikes when the days are long and therefore often rather warm.
If it's really as good as the hype makes it out, I could life with the fact that I would look like a Berghain Raver on a trail wearing such a shirt.

What the fucking fuck did I just read. What would you be consuming while hiking anyway? How? Why? OP seems cool but even considering to mention something like this is beyond belief to me. Please get me out of this clownworld.

Podcasts for example.
A bad habit of mine is constantly wearing earbuds and listening to a podcast, an audiobook or music.
Constantly means pretty much 10h a day x_x
My brain rejecting this constant stimulation during a hike was realy helpfull to break with that habit.

Addiction to Information / constant stimulation is something people often overlook...

Oh and constantly thinking about stuff and not giving your brain a rest is also an unhealthy habit ...

I went on a few hours hike around Loch Lomond with my friend the other day. It was nice and dry but every mountain and large hill was completely snow topped. There were also a lot of animals and interesting birds around where we passed through, farm animals and otherwise. We got to see a heron bathe in a river.

Also a good tip for hiking food is to bring bread. My friend and I have kind of made it a habit whenever we go out because we're both poorfags. We'll literally just buy a nice loaf or baguette of bread and eat it along the way, with or without hummus. Never white bread, always something nice like olive, or seeded or sourdough bread.
It's extremely light, and if you're eating good quality stuff it's also extremely calorically and nutrient dense.

This is maybe a longshot but I'm going down to Cambridge to see my boyfriend in a month. If you're up for it we could maybe make a day trip out to see you and have a very small Denpa meet assuming you live anywhere close.

I agree on the bread, I used to hike with bread all the time from the local community food pantry
I could make my way over to Cambridge at some point I'd love to meet fellow Denpas

The topic of food is a great one, especially when it comes to casual or low budget meals for more casual hikes.
When it comes to serious hikes, I already shilled for "Gear Skeptic" in the OP.
That guy made one of the best on trail nutrition guides I've read and worked with.

Bread is indeed a cheap, versatile pick.
As a central european I highly enjoy traditional "pumpernickel" wich is black, dense, squareshaped rye bread that won't spoil for a whole year when kept in it's foil-packaging and usually sells for 2€ per Kilogramm.
Swedish crispbread is also a peak hiking food for poor people.

For like 10€ you can get a small 3-tealight raclette-set so you'll have the option to have a nice slice of bread with melted cheese on top for example, any time, anywhere.

Or you can go all out and get a gas cooking setup, wich opens up a ton of options. I usually go for making mulled wine on casual winter hikes, reheating leftover stew, boiling dumplings or even fodue if I'm feeling fancy.

Baking calorie dense oatmeal-cookies for example, as well as doing your own trail-mix is also a good way to safe a lot of money with little time investment.

Oh and all kinds of dried meats and fish are also worth looking into...

hiking is definetly one of those hobbies that can be extremely beneficial to agoraphobics with an appreciation for nature, last time i went out to walk the trail i found some psychedelic mushrooms, I also found myself under a massive bridge where a river ran through and the walls where covered in some impressive grafitti I ended up staying there all afternoon stacking rocks by the river and flipping over rocks analyzing the fauna, im thinking i will trying going there next time it rains so i can relax and listen to the water, although im now a bit timid about going out by myself since I transitioned cause i now find physical tasks much more demanding specially for my upper body, seeing ecosystems untouched by industrialization is something every society hating denpa should experience so you can trully understand the treachery of over production and consumption, humanity must pay the price and return its nitrogen to the earth.

It is a new by my standards, it's only in 1930 that we started to extract testosterone and estrogen from bull testes and from the piss of pregnant female specimens respectively. Looking at that date, I can deduce that the start of industrialization couldn't have been be the (sole) prerequisite, but off the top of my head you need literal tons of crushed bull testes to extract a month's of test HRT, and you have to preserve it. Are the yields a lot better for piss or what. Are we missing critical DIY HRT knowledge?

Why the fuck does there always have to be a tizzy about trans people on this fucking board? Just leave it out, eunuchs have existed for thousand of years, so have people who have had a not so cis experience with gender. The hijra and muxes are an example of this. Phytoestrogens exist in many different plants as well.
Our currant conceptualization of transgender people may be recent, but so are many other phenomena to do with medicine and sociology.
Just because it hasn't been conceived of in the exact same form over a long period does not diminish it's existence.

Also it is perfectly reasonable to dislike things about industrialization, because it has allowed for the greatest amount of oppression mankind has ever seen. No problem with the advancements in technology, but industrialization itself concentrates the power of those advancements into that hands of the very few which causes immense suffering. blah blah techno feudalism is the end stage of capitalism because capitalism is inherently exploitative and industrialization exacerbates it blah blah

If you didn't want things to be a tizzy about trans people, you wouldn't have typed out such a long ass reply. You are looking for a fight and contributing to thread derailment.

Step of your high horse. The guy I was replying to opened up their shitty argument one someone who didn't say anything to ask for it, with the t slur to boot.
There's a theme of twats just deciding to waltz into threads and start being venomous to people as soon as they know they are trans without provocation, with bitter rhetoric and stupid arguments that noone asked for.
The only people who are making the place uncomfy are them, because they purposefully do so. Paradoxically, if you ignore them and don't call them out that shit festers and I'm not going to have to leave another place because it has been overrun by backwards thinking troglodytes.

Yeah that's true but your not supposed to feed the zoo animals. And why do you even bother arguing with these people? You just give yourself headache. The mods here are t girl chasers so they should just remove it but I get the feeling that your kind want to talk about these issues and the only place you can do that is when someone dumps a load in a thread and you get the opportunity to air your opinions by arguing with them. If you want to stop them from festering a simple "fuck off" is enough. If you want healthy trans issues discussion than just make a thread for that.

People that hate you will hate you no matter what you do and as uncomfy as they are there probably are a lot of those kinds of people everywhere you go online including here. So maybe you want to prove them wrong so it looks good for the fence sitters or because you want to defend yourself? It doesn't matter because people that are anti-trans can't be convinced. Simple as that. Arguing with them online is just letting them get inside your head.

You have a point and you presented yourself very rationally, I apologize if I offended you in my last reply. I think I am just tired of being gradually pushed out of places so I jump to engaging with these people in an attempt to not have that happen over again.

I'm thinking about saving up a bunch of money and then just backpacking for a while around the country, I have previous experience with camping and hiking however I have not done either over a long period (months).

I've looked at a few maps and determined that it is entirely possible for me to achieve this with some training before to prepare my body. My mind is already ready.
What tips can fellow outdoor denpas give for a journey like this?

So? How are you in a fist fight? Can you swing? And Travel light. You don't need to pack everything, just the essentials. Biggest mistake is to pack a ton of unnecessary stuff. There's no use lugging around things you absolutely don't need. Have some clothes, towel, med kit, some spare food, tape, emergency supplies, maybe a book or a handheld, and that's it. Everything else you can just buy when and if you need it. Stick something heavy in that backpack and practice marching around to build endurance.

be 20 y/o Moscow student
gf situation goes sideways
decides he’ll “prove he’s a real man” by running off into the >forests of Novosibirsk Oblast
takes a buddy with him on the train + supplies
buddy gets cold feet (literally), bails back to civilization
OP stays because pride/obsession/“I have to do this”
temperature hits ~-20°C
he starts posting from his phone on a survival / hermit forum >asking how not to die out there
people tell him to turn back ASAP
he replies basically “either I survive here or I die here; not a joke”
signal/battery dies
searches go on for a long time, nothing
later a hunter finds the camp: crude shelter, student ID/phone nearby, body

and the bleakest part: it wasn’t deep wilderness. it was comparatively close to a major road.
this is what “main character syndrome + nature” looks like.

thread question: how often do you think this happens now, but with GPS + chats instead of forums?
